Tää postaus tulee oleen Lukio V High School.
Hi everybody!
I decided to tell you what differences Finland and USA have between them. My knowaledge is limited mostly in what is happening in Michigan so in Florida things can be different. I also want to say that I'm not saying what is the right way to do things. I don't want to defend anybody, I'm only telling what are the differencies.
So the first chapter is going to be about Finnish high school V American high school. First I tought that American High School is not that different, but now my opion has changed. I'm going to write everything in Finnish first and then in English.
Jaksoja vuoden aikana on yleensä 4-6.
Opot tekee niiden lukkarit. Jaksoja on yleensä 2 tai 3 riippuen koulusta.
- Suomessa lukio on luokat 10-12. Yleensä ikähaarakku on 16-18, mutta toki on niitä, jotka on alottanu koulun vuotta aikasemmin, jääny luokalleen, tai käy lukion neljään vuoteen (mikä on nykyään aika yleistä)Sen takia siis jotkut 10 luokalla olevat saattaa olla 15 vuotiaita ja vanhimmat valmistujat on 19-20 vuotiaita.
- Amerikassa high school on luokka-asteet 9-12. Ikähaarukka on 14-18.
Oppituntien väliset välitunnit on 5-20min yleensä 10-15min.
6. Muita eroja
Erittäin suosittu on peanut butter jelly sandwhich.
- Amerikassa kaikkilla on aina isot reput.
IN ENGLISH
1. School day Length
- Finnish law says that the school may not begin before eihgt AM. So, depending of the school, day begins somewhere between 8 - 8.30 AM. Usually at least once in a week school starts around 10 AM. The school usually runs from 3-4 PM. Depending on the length of the hours, school day usually includes 4-7 lessons. For example, in my school, the longest day is 08:05-15: 15 and five different substances.
- In America, school starts 7:30 every morning almost everywhere and ends at 14:20. All days are equal in length and includes five different lessons.
2. Schedule and periods
- In Finland, the students make their own schedules. I know that in smaller towns school may make the schedules, but at least in larger schools students make their schedules by themselfs and now they can do it online. In Finnish High Schools they usually have 4-6 periods/sections during the year.
- American students can choose what they'd like to have in their schedules, but they may not get those what they pick. Counselors makes their schedules. Depending about the school there is 2 or 3 periods/sections in a year.
3. Age and grade levels
- In Finland, high school grades are 10-12. In general, students age are 16-18, but of course there are those who have started school year early, need to repeat a year, or decided to go high school in four years (what is pretty common these days) So that's why some in 10th grade can be 15 years old and the oldest who are graduaiting are 19-20 years old.
- In America, high school grades are 9-12. Age range is 14-18. That's why many people are year younger in every grade than they would be in Finland. It depends how old they are when they start kindergarden.
4. Delays and intermediate classes
- Finnish high schools does not use the bells that make noise. Students know that they need to be ready to start a lesson when it is the time. Breaks between lessons are 5-20min usually 10-15min. During the break you have time to go to the bathroom, go to the next class and to catch up with friends. Teachers also recommend to go outside get fresh air. In the middle of a lesson you may ask for permission to go to the bathroom, but it's not common anymore in high school. If you're late for your lesson you usually have of two options. 1. Teacher just marks that you have been late and you can just go to sit. 2. They don't let you in to the class. Typically, option one.
- In America there is 5min breaks just to go classroom to other. For outdoors you don't have time and it is also prohibited. If you're not in the next hour class when the bell rang, then you need to go to the office to get pass so you can entere to the classroom. To the bathroom you can go during the class if the teacher gives to you a pass.
5. Absences and departure from school
- In Finland, teachers may mark the student's absences, but does not remind students that they have too many absences. It is the student's own responsibility that they will pass their classes and courses. You can also leave the school when you want to and nobady won't notice.
- In America when you enter to school you must have an ID card. It has your picture, name and grade level of the school. When you go to the school at the morning there is security people checking that you have the ID. When a student has accumulated at least five absences, the school will send a letter to inform the student's parents. Also you can't leave the school without that someone will come to get you.
6. Other differences
- In Finland the school lunch is free and there is a decent meal like: potatoes and meatballs, salad, bread, milk and water.
- In Finland, teachers Do not follow if the students have done their homework or not, and the behavior doesn't score points. Sure, if you're a troublemaker teachers remember you and it may affect the number of your final grade and the same thing, if you are active and you always know the answers.
- In Finland students use bags or backbags
- Finnish schools don't have after school activities
- American school meals cost some cents. Food options are different depending the school, but often I have seen that the lunch is a piece of pizza, apple and milk. However, many people makes their own lunch. Many time it is bread, fruit, cereals, cheese sticks, chips or something like that always depends on the person. Very popular is the peanut butter jelly sandwich.
- Everyday teachers gives points to students about how they behave in class and if they have done their homework.
- All high school students always use big backpacks.
- American schools had different clubs and teams that you can go after school.

I want to still remind that these are just my experiencies, so things can be different around the usa. And this was about high school not lower grades. But if you know differencies please comment and tell them.
My next post is going to me about my life again and after that I will continue this Finland V USA thing. If you have sometthing that you are interested to hear about, you can comment or somehow tell me.
